Nude teen pageant? For kids? Where is this happening? One of the most shocking things parents see today is the proliferation of what are called "junior miss" or "little miss" beauty pageants. These pageants are intended for girls aged 10-13 years old, but they're often stricter about the age limit than you might think. Surprisingly, these beauty contests often include seminude contestants. You may be thinking to yourself; “Wait, this seems like it's not only immoral - but illegal!" However, many states don't have any regulations banning child pornography or statutes prohibiting "seminudity". This is because minors themselves cannot legally consent to sexual activity with an adult in almost all states. Pageant parents are usually very careful when they are insuring the safety of their children. Parents will usually hire an attorney to make sure that there are no legal issues with this. The main issue is the legal definition of "seminudity" and what it means to be "seminude" and what is considered pornography. The fact remains that many age-appropriate girls feel pressured to participate in such pageants for financial reasons. One parent pointed out that it is a lot easier to convince the parents of a girl that won't have to sleep in a boudoir than it is to tell a boy they will have to "sleep in the nude". They also pointed out that they believe as long as the pageants are age appropriate, as long as they are emphasizing the importance of beauty and being well groomed, as long as there are no sexual situations involved, etc. they have done all they can do within the law. However, if they do go over those lines, then it becomes an issue of whether or not there should or would be criminal charges. What state you live in will determine which legal aspects you might need to look at. However, many states don't regulate nudity or seminudity, but they do regulate pornography (which includes nudity). This leads to the following question; "What is pornography?" Some people consider it any nudity. Others consider it only sexually explicit material. This brings us back to the definition of what is seminude? One state's statute says that seminudity is simply "being less than totally and opaquely covered." This means if your child decides to take part in a nude beauty pageant, you should be aware of the risks involved and make an informed decision about whether that particular pageant is right for your child.
